  Thallus orbicular to irregularly spreading, 2–6 (–10) cm wide, closely attached without any projecting rhizohyphae. Lobes narrow, 1–2 mm wide, flabellate-cuneate, contiguous to rarely discrete, centrally complex-imbricate, concave at often whitish margins which are covered in bluish white isidia; isidia granular becoming gnarled-glomerulate and soralia-like. Upper surface smooth but scabrid towards lobe apices, grey-blue to grey-brown. Lower surface short-tomentose at margins, tufts of short brownish or blackish rhizohyphae centrally, pale buff or whitish, darker towards centre. Cyanobiont Nostoc,in clusters. Apothecia rare, sessile, laminal, to 1.5 mm wide; disc concave, red-brown; thalline exciple well-developed, isidiate. Ascospores 10–15 × 5–8 µm, with rugulose exosporium. CHEMISTRY: P+ yellow-orange. Vicanicin, norvicanicin and rarely leprolomin and terpenoids, occasionally P- (no substances).
     
  Occurs mainly on bark; rarely on rock (Tas.). A fairly common species along the east coast of Australia from W.A., Qld, N.S.W., Norfolk Is., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas. Confined to lowland humid forests from mangroves to wet sclerophyll forests to rainforest margins up to 900 m.
